VISION &
PRIORITIES

A passionate fourth-generation resident of Newark is dedicated to advancing the city's progress as a Council Member At Large. Committed to improving the quality of life for all residents, RJ is determined to lead Newark towards a brighter future.

Your vote is crucial to making this vision a reality.

01

NEIGHBORHOOD
DEVELOPMENT

In many neighborhoods throughout Newark, residents often encounter the disheartening sight of neglected properties and vacant lots that contribute to a decline in community morale and safety. The presence of slum-like conditions not only affects the aesthetics of our neighborhoods but also detracts from the overall quality of life for all residents. As your Council Member-at-Large, Gourdine is committed to addressing these issues head-on by proposing legislation designed to hold slumlords accountable and challenge the executive branch to take meaningful action. By prioritizing the improvement of city-owned properties and enforcing stricter regulations on landlords, we can revitalize our neighborhoods and create thriving environments for families to live and grow.

02

EDUCATION
AND
RECREATIONAL

Education is the cornerstone of a thriving community, and it is imperative that we ensure every resident has access to vital educational resources. By partnering with nonprofits and charitable organizations, we can mobilize a citywide initiative aimed at equipping residents with the skills necessary to obtain their high school diplomas and pursue higher education opportunities. Together, we can create mentorship programs, tutoring services, and workshops that foster a love for learning and a commitment to personal growth. It is our responsibility to make quality education accessible to all, so that every Newark resident has the chance to succeed and thrive.

03

WORKFORCE
DEVELOPMENT

Newark stands at a pivotal moment, and now is the time to unite our community in the pursuit of economic opportunity. As your Council Member, Gourdine envisions a city where Newarkers can access meaningful employment that aligns with their skills and aspirations. To achieve this goal, we must focus on creating pathways for our local workforce, particularly for residents who may be facing barriers to employment. By establishing partnerships with local businesses and industries, we can identify areas of need and ensure that training programs are developed to provide residents with the skills that match the demands of the job market.

04

AFFORDABLE AND

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

One of the primary drivers of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing. As your Council Member-at-Large, Gourdine advocates for policies that facilitate the development of affordable housing units, including zoning reforms to encourage mixed-use developments. By increasing the supply of affordable housing, more individuals and families will have the opportunity to secure stable living situations, reducing the risk of homelessness.

Homelessness is often linked to a variety of underlying issues, including mental health challenges, substance abuse, and lack of access to healthcare. Your Council Member-at-Large will work tirelessly with local nonprofits and healthcare providers to expand support services for homeless individuals. This includes establishing outreach programs that connect individuals with mental health services, addiction treatment, and medical care. Additionally, creating resource centers in every neighborhood that offer information, job training, and skills development courses can help empower individuals to transition out of homelessness.
